Skiing and snowboarding is considered an institution in Canada and for good reason. There is no shortage of great snow, the mountains are big and naturally beautiful, the lift infrastructure and resort facilities are impressive without being overly grandiose, and the laidback atmosphere and friendly locals are a major drawcard. With the exception of Whistler and Banff, Canadian ski resorts feel almost deserted. The lack of crowds keeps skiers and boarders very happy with plenty of opportunities for fresh tracks. And if the ski resorts aren't enough to satisfy your every whim, you can spread your wings and go heli-skiing. Heli skiing in Canada is considered to be world renowned! Alternatively you can also partake in some BC cat skiing. For any adventurer, cat skiing and heli skiing will be absolute heaven for you and a highlight of any skiing holiday to Canada. This experience is sure to top all others. Pristine white slopes of powder, millions of hectares of backcountry terrain and high annual snowfall, stunning mountain scenery and your own helicopter to ferry you around. Heli-skiing is nirvana for any keen skier or boarder and Canada, with its backcountry terrain and champagne powder, is the perfect destination to sample it for yourself. In addition much of B.C.'s terrain lies below the tree line, therefore reducing the risk that your heli-ski trip will be delayed due to bad weather. Trees also provide protection from the wind and give better visibility to the skiers. You'll find many resorts in western Canada, such as the mega resort of Whistler near Vancouver, and Silver Star and Big White near Kelowna in the Okanagan. The powder triangle is in the south-eastern corner of British Columbia, but there's a bit of debate as to how far the triangle extends partly because some people use the term interchangeably with "the powder highway". The area includes Red Mountain, Whitewater, and Fernie Alpine Resort, and the triangle possibly also extends up north to Revelstoke and Kicking Horse near Golden. In the neighbouring province of Alberta there are also many resorts, including the Banff ski resorts (Sunshine Village, Norquay and Lake Louise) and Nakiska near Calgary.
