Hakkoda
PDF Print E-mail

With 8 mountains and no groomed slopes, Hakkoda offers a wide variety including the steep and deep, a place to carve your signature on an untouched slope and stand back to admire your work, breathtaking views and the enormous snowmonsters. There is no other place in Japan like it! A paradise for boarders, telemarkers and skiers who love powder snow! Caution: After tasting the sweetness of Hakkoda, you might not want to go back (to groomed slopes or even home)!

The top of the mountain is at a height of about 1500 meters. There are two trails, the direct trail and the forest trail. The direct trailis the steeper and shorter of the two. Arriving at the top, it quickly becomes apparent what makes Hakkoda so much different (and perhaps better) than many other Japanese ski areas. The top section is left ungroomed, just a wide open space, some trees, and some very bumpy terrain. The trails are marked with coloured poles every 20 meters or so.

Hakkoda is not a ski resort in its usual form. This is a powder mountain (or series of mountains) where you can powder your nose, eat powder – whatever takes your fancy!
Typically Hakkoda attracts hardcore powderhounds who appreciate the joys of deep powder, off-piste riding and the backcountry.
Hakkoda Ski and Snowboard Terrain: Hakkoda is largely serviced by one ropeway. There are a couple of ungroomed runs (aka courses), whilst the rest of the area is one huge off-piste paradise with 654 metres of vertical drop.
In addition to the ropeway, there is a double chair, or romance chair as the Japanese love to call them, this chair lift is owned by a different lift company and provides access to a small area. Even though these small groomed courses are for intermediates, overall, Hakkoda is not really a mountain well suited to inexperienced riders.

Due to its northerly position, the Hakkoda snow quality is much lighter and dryer than further south.
The annual snowfall statistic for Hakkoda is unknown, but a guesstimate would put the snowfall in the realm of 14-20 metres per season.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
