Sweden's number one ski resort
Åre is the alpine heart of Sweden with more than 100 years of skiing tradition, making it Sweden's number one ski resort and deservedly so. It offers an excellent snow record from November to May and a superb ski area in a beautiful setting, stretching 10 kilometres along Åre's frozen lake. The unspoilt scenery is breathtaking, encompassing low sweeping mountains, pine clad forests and colourful homesteads dotted across the landscape. The resort consists of four accommodation and ski areas known as Duved, Tegefjäll, Åre Village and Åre Björnen, which are all covered on the one lift pass. Åre and Åre Björnen ski areas are lift connected and there is a regular free ski bus service between all the villages and ski areas. Each area caters to different holiday needs and ski abilities, which has resulted in Åre attracting a diverse range of people including families, couples and young groups and it's not just the ski area and snow record that makes Åre so popular; visitors here are welcomed with genuine friendliness, high standards of accommodation and cuisine, and a huge choice of non-ski activities. Once you have skied here you'll find yourself returning again and again. The heart of Åre is a small, attractive square surrounded by a good choice of stylish and quirky shops, with a good range of restaurants offering a variety of dining options and a good choice of bars to suit every taste - whether it's cocktails or lively bands. Åre's nickname is 'little Stockholm' and this is most true in and around the village centre where the atmosphere is relaxed and stylish with a funky edge. On weekends, the energy changes and Åre rocks with many bars offering lively 'after-ski'.
The skiing is ideally suited to intermediate and advanced skiers and riders and beginners are well catered for in the Rodkullen area, which is just a 15 minute free ski bus ride away. Having hosted the World Ski Championships just recently in February, intermediates and advanced skiers can test their skills on this fabulous run, as well as explore some great off-piste with a guide. Beginners are well catered for with some gently rolling slopes at Duved and gentle runs at Bjornen and there is excellent tuition at the ski school and all the instructors speak English. Åre is also a popular resort for riders and the Duved ski area is especially good for beginner snowboarders. There are also terrain parks with pipes, jumps and boarder-cross in Tegefjall, Rodkullen and Årebjörnen ski areas, some of which are floodlit in the evenings. The wide, gentle and uncrowded ski areas at Årebjornen and Duved are great for families. Årebjornen in particular, offers dedicated children's lifts, warming huts, forest trails, a weekly programme of fun activities and a crèche facility for children aged 2-12 years. Here, English-speaking nannies supervise indoor and outdoor games and activities.
