Sierra Nevada exudes the intoxicating Spanish love of the good life as well as great skiing opportunities

Initially, Spain may not conjure up an image of impressive snow covered mountain peaks catering for one of the world's most exclusive winter sports, however, Sierra Nevada, which means 'Snowy Mountain Range', has some of the highest peaks in Europe not to mention the highest concentration of peaks over 3,000 metres in the country. As one of Europe's highest resorts it also has a surprisingly good snow record considering the generally warm, sunny weather. It is the number one location for winter sport in Spain and it has the longest season in the country. From the top of the weather vane, skiers are provided with spectacular views across to the Mediterranean Sea and on the clearest days as far as the Atlas Mountains of Morocco and due to its located 32 kilometres southeast of Granada, the resort attracts many international visitors.

In addition to alpine skiing and snowboarding, Sierra Nevada offers many other winter sports including cross-country skiing, artistic skiing, telemark skiing, trekking and adventure skiing. The resort also features an artificial snow system which ensures over 15 kilometres of ski-able slopes throughout the mountain. Ski lifts are open to the public from 9.00 am till 4.30 pm daily, however, weather conditions may affect lift schedules. Lifts are also open Friday and Saturday evenings for floodlit night time skiing. The ski village Pradollano provides comfortable accommodation at hotels of various categories, as well as numerous restaurants offering typical Granada, Spanish or international cuisines. Although the village may be small, the nightlife is charged with that special Spanish spirit that grabs hold of the moment and normally stretches it into the wee hours of the morning. Other resort facilities include bars, pubs and discotheques. You will find El Golpe and Soho Bar de Copas both have great action immediately after skiing. These would be the spots to make new friends that you can mett up with later on in the night. Also try Mango and Sitcky Fingers as well. Basically, any place surrounding the main square will be packed as skiers come off the mountain and if its a sunny day, the après-ski is even more wonderful.

Snowboarding is allowed on the entire mountain, but limited to the designated beginner ski area. There is a snowboard school and plenty of snowboard rentals, as well as the Sulayr Snow Park which can be fun and has recently had some nice improvements including The Giant Pyramid. The Borreguiles zone has a nice ski and boardercross area, but real riders tend to strike out for the Laguna de Yeguas to head off-piste and play on the ridges and natural banked sides. After cruising down Laguna de Yeguas take the Dilar charilift to the ridge and choose your spot to drop back into the bowl carving beneath the chair you just rode. With fresh snow falls you will find endless amounts of off-piste in which to practice your powder-riding techniques. Regular competitions are also held throughout the season both on a National and International level and numerous snowboard schools have set up in resort offering plenty of tuition opportunities.sierra-nevada_polaroids
