This is the highest settlement in Vysoke Tatry (the High Tatras), situated a 20 hectare lake of the smae name, the second largest on the Slovak side of the High Tatras. Strbske Pleso was orginally founded as a hiking centre, and later established new curative houses, recreation facilities and a top sports complex. It is excellently connected to transportation links, and serves as a good starting point for a host of hiking excursions and day-trips in the mountains during summer and a well-known skiing centre during winter, which has since hosted the 1970 World Championship, as well as a range of competitive European and world-class skiing events, including ski-jumping and cross-country. For the fans of the Nordic ski disciplines, the Tatra Cup is an event which is featured annually in the World Cup series.

The resort town has a busy cultural life, and has been proclaimed as one of the top skiing resorts in Slovakia and boasts excellently finished downhill runs and cross-country tracks, evening skiing, ski service and ski equipment hiring services. Skiing is good here for beginners and intermediates and for more competent skiers, you will have the time of your life visiting the most highly situated ski centre Skalnate Pleso, where on the demanding slope of the Lomnicke sedlo you can test your skiing skills. You should also not miss the chance for exciting night skiing or the view of snowy hills from a bird's perspective while paragliding and if you love snowboard adrenaline, you can find excellent terrain tempting the inner free-rider or jumper. There are lots of terrain and obsticles to challenge any ability level. Strbske Pleso is also close to Tatranska Lomnica.
