Beyond the perfectly groomed slopes you'll find a true Eldorado for deep snow enthusiasts
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is Germany's number 1 metropolis during the winter months. Host of the 1936 Winter Olympics, this all-rounder ski resort with a sparkling heritage offers excellent beginner schools, new and advanced expert runs, as well as perfect terrain for intermediates. The Zugspitze region is a true Eldorado for winter sports enthusiasts, with its diverse mountain ranges, perfectly groomed slopes, from the baby runs to the world-famous Kandahar and Olympia downhill runs in the Classic Zone. Beginners and pros alike will encounter optimum conditions against the backdrop of Germany's most majestic peak from November to May. Not only does the area boast state of the art access and transport facilities, but also snowy conditions to die for, which, at an altitude of between 2,000 and 2,830 metres, makes for unlimited enjoyment. Munich airport is only 2 hours away making this German ski resort easy to access. A common lift ticket links the two largest nearby Austrian Alpine villages of Lermoos and Seefeld, with Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Snowboarders can really have a blast on the Schneeferner mountain where you can enjoy wide slopes. You can also do cool jumps using the varied terrain and the many natural obstacles on the Zugspitze plateau. Deep-snow fans will enjoy the Osterfelder region, particularly the area around the Bernadine lift. Each year snowboarders and some freestylers meet at the event 'Spring in the Park'. This is the biggest and best-known event of its kind, closing out the season with perfectly shaped pipes, a snow park, a whirlpool, a chill-out lounge, popular programs, and legendary parties.
If cross-country skiing is your thing, than you can be sure to find a trail that's right for you, whether you prefer free-style skating, traditional trails, or the floodlit Loipe at Kainzenbad. The entry points to the trails are easy to reach either by foot or by bus, and there is no charge for using the trails. Courses are also offered by the local ski-schools and by the schools that specialize in cross-country skiing.
