Modern skiing and old traditions combine to make for an exceptional ski holiday
This small medieval town and its ski area have now been transformed into a year-round, international destination resort. A lively and historic rich ski resort with exciting modern ski areas all within the spectacular beauty of the Pirin Mountain, its untamed nature and recognition of being a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a truly rare and winning combination. The resort's pistes are accessed via the speedy gondola, located just above the town centre, ensuring queues are kept to a minimum. Extensive après-ski activities are well provided for by most of the resort's hotels, whilst the lively 'mehanas' offer traditional evenings entertainment. Resort attractions include night skiing, tobogganing, wine tasting and Bulgarian folk night shows, souvenir shops; many traditional tavernas (serving Bansko's renowned regional cuisine), bars, pubs and live music venues in the old town; several discos; bowling, cross country trails; and a sports stadium. For skiing the Shiligarnika, Stara Pista, Todorka and Plato ski runs are suitable for beginners and intermediaries, and experts may use the Banderiza and Ctzurna mogila ski runs. Advanced skiers also have the additional challenge of skiing the runs where Bulgaria's Olympic champions train.
