St. Johann is a small and friendly resort with a good après-ski scene and a great choice for beginners, intermediates and mixed ability groups.

St. Johann in the Tyrol offers first-class ski slopes which are easy to navigate and well developed with state-of-the-art ski lifts. Indeed, its special character and beauty play as large a role as the skiing facilities enticing visitors from all over the world. This resort retains its Austrian mountain atmosphere and character in spite of its sophistication, and, the area offers enough skiing challenge and diversity to please most snow enthusiasts. The town, which is situated on the other side of the mountain from Kitzbuehl, has a much smaller ski area than its famed neighbour, so it may not hold the attention of expert skiers for an entire week, but families, beginners and intermediates will have a lot of fun on its prepared runs. Downhill slopes are on the north face of the Kitzbuehler Horn, with the highest vertical only 1000 metres, short by alpine standards, but heady enough for beginners and intermediates.

Snowboarders will find a halfpipe in which to get some air and if expert skiers and snowboarders do in fact get bored, Kitzbuehl is only a 10-minute ride away. There are a number of other ski resorts conveniently located nearby. After all, this is the Tyrol, the Austrian state that has 119 ski resorts. The Schneewinkel area pass opens up a wealth of other possibilities, encompassing the ski areas of 10 resorts, all linked by local bus services or you can take advantage of the more expensive Kitzbuehler Alpen Ski Pass, which covers more than 650 kilometres of trails in more than 25 resorts. The Steinplatte area even allows you to ski or snowboard into neighbouring Germany.

Non skiers will also find lots to so in this traffic free resort, such as ice-skating, sleigh rides, tobogganing, hiking or the Panoramabad Complex with its' indoor pool, water slide, sauna and steam room facilities. St Johann offers lively yet traditional entertainment without attracting the party animals. You will find this resort full of life both day and night, with hotspots such as Bunny's Pub and Max's Bar being particular favourites when the sun goes down and the lifts close.

The pedestrian centre is perfect for evening strolls, before deciding on which of the 40 or so restaurants to dine in. You can dance till the early hours at the Club Crowded House or return to one of the cosy hotel bars for a gluhwein, before doing it all again the next day. On a ski holiday here you are bound to also appreciate St. Johann's rich history which stretches back for many centuries. Before it became a network of famous ski resorts, St. Johann had many important religeous and political figures living here, who have left behind them many ornate buildings, some dating back 700 years, and traditions still practised today.st_johann_polaroids
